Roxbury Principal Fires Security Guards, Hires Art Teachers

In Reggio Emilia, someone articulated something that I knew but couldn’t articulate myself. This person told me, how an adult views children will affect how they respond and react to children. These responses and actions will be reciprocated by the…

Study Tourism in Reggio Emilia

It’s hard not to get past the excitement that I am traveling to another country as a tourist.  To think about duomos, and leaning towers, and pasta, and wine.    But I am going on a study tour.  I am being given an opportunity that is much bigger than…

School Readiness? Blech! → oregonlive.com

Do you know what I think of when I hear the term “school readiness?” I think that schools are trying very hard to get the children to conform to their style of interacting with children, and so they come up with checklists and identifiers that reflect what they believe to be important. This kind of relationship with children gives them little voice and power, and is not democratic. Furthermore, adults will struggle to have children pidgeon-hole their very being into what they believe to be important which can contribute to an even worse problem than not being “school ready.” It can lead to mistrust and apathy which is certainly rampant in our schools.
